Racism today
Racism against Romani and Sinti people began long before the racist persecution during National Socialism. It expressed itself historically in several climaxes of violent escalations up to the Nazi genocide, which aimed at the extermination of all Romani and Sinti people. In the various European countries, Romani people were subject to state and non-state persecution. Also, racism against Romani and Sinti people always developed in relation to racisms against other collectives such as colonial racism, Orientalism, and anti-Semitism.
This racist violence affects the psyche and bodies of people for generations, causing life hardships, injuries and illnesses, shortened life expectancy, and even death. Racism excludes Romani and Sinti people as individuals and as a group, and intertwined with other social affiliations such as class, gender, sex, religion, ableism from equal rights in society.
