Under construction

Demonstration to fully preserve the monument, June 2020 (2020, © RomaniPhen e.V.)

OUR MEMORIES ARE NOT CONSTRUCTION SITES!

In the summer of 2020, a large manifestation took place in Berlin for the complete preservation of the Memorial to the Sinti and Roma of Europe who were murdered under National Socialism. Between 500-700 people took part in the demonstration. The protesters were against a construction project by Deutsche Bahn to build a suburban railway line under the memorial site, which would affect the memorial or the access to the memorial completely or partially. The planned S21 should bypass the Reichstag and pass under the monument in the second construction phase between Potsdamer Platz and the main railway station in Berlin. The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma as well as the Memorial Foundation negotiated with the responsible senators, the Bundestag administration and Deutsche Bahn AG on alternative ways of bypassing the monument. The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma spoke out against the initial plans for a massive disruption of the monument and declared itself prepared to make partial compromises that did not significantly affect the monument. Other victims’ associations and self-organisations protested vehemently against any interference with the memorial. They called for the memorial to the Sinti and Roma murdered in National Socialism in Europe to be declared a hub, as well as the monument to the Jews murdered in National Socialism in Europe, so that it would be protected from any interference.
